چکیده

Background: Parotid lesions are uncommon issue in clinical practice with wide differential diagnosis based upon multiple pathological varieties and limited clinical values. Computed tomography (CT) try to solve this issue as possible. Objectives: To evaluate the diagnostic reliability of multi-detector computed tomography (MDCT) in characterization of benign and malignant parotid lesions using a systematic approach in comparison to final pathological data. Patients & Methods: A retrospective study includes136 patients diagnosed pathologically as parotid tumors underwent multi-detector computerized tomography (MDCT) examination using 64-row multi-detector computerized tomography (CT) scanner. All the images were evaluated for certain multi-detector computerized tomography (MDCT) criteria in a systematic manner. Results: Our study revealed primary malignant tumors in 88 patients, secondary metastatic lesions in 3 patients and benign tumors in 45 patients. Five multi-detector computerized tomography (MDCT) criteria were statistically significant in differentiating between benign and malignant parotid lesions, they were; lesion margin (p=0.001), location (p=0.05), enhancement pattern (p=0.001), central necrosis (p=0.001) and para-pharyngeal space extension(p=0.001). Conclusion: Multi-detector computerized tomography (MDCT) can be valuable in differentiating between benign and malignant parotid lesions and leading the management strategy aiming for best surgical outcome.

Does Computed Tomography Change our Observation and Management of Fracture Non-Unions?

Background: The purpose of this study was to determine whether Multi-Detector Computed Tomography (MDCT) in addition to plain radiographs influences radiologists’ and orthopedic surgeons’ diagnosis and treatment plans for delayed unions and non-unions.   Methods: A retrospective database of 32 non-unions was reviewed by 20 observers. On a scale of 1 to 5, observers rated on X-Ray and a...

Protective effects of pomegranate seed oil on ovariectomized rats as a model of postmenopausal osteoporosis: A multi-detector computed tomography evaluation

The pomegranate seed oil (PSO), containing 17-α-estradiol, is one of the newly found phytosterols with synergistic health effects on estrogen related physiological conditions. Herein, PSO was assessed for its potential improving effects on bone characteristics in a rat model of menopausal syndrome. Three month old non-pregnant female Wistar rats (n = 30) were either sham-operated (SHAM) or ovar...

Staging Hepatocellular Carcinoma with Gadolinium-Ethoxybenzyl Diethylenetriaminepentaacetic Acid -Enhanced Magnetic Resonance Imaging: A Comparison with Multi-Detector Row Computed Tomography

Aim: To explore if gadolinium-ethoxybenzyl-diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (Gd-EOB-DTPA)-enhanced MRI provides more accurate information than multi-detector row computed tomography (MDCT) for staging hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Methods: We retrospectively investigated 112 patients with HCC who underwent MDCT and Gd-EOB-DTPAenhanced MRI within one month before treatment. Two experienced r...

Detection of coronary artery stenoses with thin-slice multi-detector row spiral computed tomography and multiplanar reconstruction.

BACKGROUND We analyzed the accuracy of multi-detector row spiral computed tomography (MDCT) using a 16-slice CT scanner with improved spatial and temporal resolution, as well as routine premedication with beta-blockers for detection of coronary stenoses. METHODS AND RESULTS Seventy-seven patients with suspected coronary disease were studied by MDCT (12x0.75-mm cross-sections, 420 ms rotation,...

Imaging evaluation of the liver using multi-detector row computed tomography in micropigs as potential living liver donors

The shortage of organ donors has stimulated interest in the possibility of using animal organs for transplantation into humans. In addition, pigs are now considered to be the most likely source animals for human xenotransplantation because of their advantages over non-human primates. However, the appropriate standard values for estimations of the liver of micropigs have not been established. Th...
